Given the continuing uncertainty about near-term prospects for the economy, a key challenge for many advisors is helping clients avoid being thrown off course by bad news and negative headlines. One way to do that is by sharing third party articles that provide a positive perspective for the period ahead.

One such outlook was an interview recorded in late June with Professor Jeremy Siegel of the Wharton School of Business. Now that it's clear the recession will not turn into a depression, stocks are poised for a recovery, says Wharton finance professor Jeremy J. Siegel. In an interview with Knowledge@Wharton, he said last week's market decline in response to rising commodity prices -- especially for energy -- and fear of the ever-growing federal deficit was no more than a short-term setback.

Another example is a recent column in the Globe and Mail, outlining three mid-term positives that the market may not be fully reflecting.

A final example of outside thinking from the McKinsey Quarterly is an April video interview with Robert Shiller of Yale, renowned for predicting the collapse of both the tech and housing bubbles. While not especially positive in the mid-term, Shiller provides a thought-provoking perspectives on the challenges ahead.

"Surveying the economic horizon: A conversation with Robert Shiller".
